South Bay Drive-In

Tonight I had an assignment to do some photos at a local drive-in movie theater for a magazine I occasionally do work for. It was very difficult getting the shots I wanted and I’m not very satisfied with the end results. As you can see from this shot, the bright screen and dark surroundings made if difficult to get a correct exposure in the image. The trick is to find enough ambient light in the foreground to provide some detail on the cars and parking lot, while still capturing some of the movie being projected on the big screen. It’s a very difficult challenge. Regardless, it was a perfect opportunity to slip in a self-portrait but I was trying to be discreet at the same time. So this shot was a single take, but I thought it was worth using.
